Cozi Alternative for iPhone (2026): Peel vs Cozi for Meal Planning

The best Cozi alternative for iPhone depends on the job you are hiring an app to do. If you want a shared family calendar and chores and lists for the whole household, Cozi is the better pick and Peel does not try to replace it. But if what you actually want is stronger recipe-and-meal-planning than Cozi's calendar-attached meal feature, Peel is the better fit: you save recipes from the web and from TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, plan them out of a flexible meal pool instead of a locked seven-day grid, and the grocery list builds itself. Two different jobs, one honest answer.

I see the same question over and over on r/Cooking: "Does anyone know of any completely FREE apps to store recipes, meal plan, and create grocery lists?" Cozi half-answers it. Its meal planner is bolted onto a family calendar, and its Recipe Box cannot pull a recipe out of a cooking video. So people who came for the calendar stay for the calendar, then go looking for something that actually collects recipes and plans meals from them. That gap is why I am writing this. For the wider field of planners across every style, our 2026 meal planning app guide covers them all.

Cozi vs Peel at a glance

Cozi sits in a category of family organizers, so here is how it compares to Peel and two other cross-platform organizers, FamilyWall and Maple, on the axes that actually decide this. Pricing and ratings move, so check each App Store listing for the current numbers. Cozi's plan prices below are current as of September 2026.

App Recipe & social import Meal planning model Family calendar & chores Free tier Platform
Peel Web plus TikTok, Instagram, YouTube (AI extraction) Flexible meal pool, cook what sounds good No Yes, generous iOS / iPadOS
Cozi Recipe Box only, no social video import Meals attached to calendar days Yes, its core strength Free with ads; Gold $39/yr, Max $79.99/yr iOS / Android / Web
FamilyWall Basic recipe saving, no social video import Basic meal planner on a calendar Yes, plus location sharing Free tier; paid Premium iOS / Android / Web
Maple Not a recipe-import tool Tasks and lists, light meal notes Yes, calendar and tasks focus Free tier; paid Premium iOS / Android / Web

Read the "recipe and social import" column against the "meal planning model" column. Three of these four are family organizers first, with a meal feature attached to a calendar. Only one is built recipe-first and plans out of a flexible pool. That is the whole decision in two columns.

Two different jobs: calendar-first family organizer vs recipe-first meal planner

Cozi and Peel are not really competing for the same slot on your home screen. Cozi is a calendar-first family organizer. The center of gravity is a shared calendar the whole household can see, with chores, to-do lists, reminders, and a Recipe Box and meal planner arranged around it. The meal planning is a spoke, not the hub. You attach a meal to a calendar day and can push its ingredients to the shopping list.

Peel comes at the same week from the opposite direction. It is recipe-first. You collect the recipes you actually want to cook, from anywhere, and planning grows out of that collection. There is no shared calendar and no chores list, on purpose. When we were building Peel, we made a deliberate choice not to become a household logistics hub, because that job was already done well and the recipe-to-plan-to-list job was not. Peel is built for a household building its kitchen over years, not for coordinating a single week's schedule. Different problem, different tool.

Where Cozi still wins

I am not going to pretend Peel replaces everything Cozi does. It does not, and if you switch expecting a family calendar, you will be disappointed. Cozi genuinely wins on the whole-household coordination job:

  • Shared family calendar. Everyone in the house sees the same schedule, color-coded by person. Peel has nothing like this.
  • Chores and to-do lists for the household. Assign tasks, keep running family lists, set reminders. Again, not something Peel does.
  • Cross-platform. Cozi runs on iOS, Android, and the web. Peel is iOS and iPadOS only right now.
  • Long track record. Cozi has been the default family organizer for years and is free to download and use, ad-supported, with paid Gold ($39/yr) and Max ($79.99/yr) tiers.

If the pain you are solving is "our family can't keep a shared schedule straight," none of that is a reason to leave Cozi. Keep it. The rest of this post is for people whose pain is the other half: collecting recipes and planning meals from them.

How Peel plans meals: import from anywhere, a flexible pool, an auto grocery list

Start with where the recipes come from, because this is where Cozi's Recipe Box hits its ceiling. Peel imports from recipe websites and blogs (unlimited and free) and from TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube using AI extraction. That stir-fry you saved from a Reel and the sheet-pan dinner from a YouTube video both land in your recipe box as real, structured recipes with ingredients and steps, not a bookmark. Free accounts get social-import credits that refresh every week, and Premium removes the cap. Cozi cannot pull a recipe out of a cooking video at all. If social video is where you find most of your food, that difference alone is the reason to switch the recipe side over. Our guide to saving recipes from TikTok walks through exactly how it works.

Then there is how you plan. This is the part I felt personally before I built anything. I used to plan meals Monday through Sunday, feel good about it, and then a Thursday event or an unexpected night out would blow up the plan, and it felt like failure every single week. A calendar punishes you for a normal life. So I built a pool instead: you fill it with options for the week, shop for it, and then choose what to cook the day of or the day before. No slot has to be filled. The pool flexes; a calendar does not. That is the core difference between planning in Peel and attaching meals to days in Cozi. Our flexible meal planning guide covers the full workflow.

The grocery list closes the loop. Once your options are in the pool, Peel builds the list automatically from what you actually plan to cook, filterable by recipe and grouped into store sections. Swap a meal and the list updates without breaking anything, because it is tied to the pool, not to fixed days. Cozi can push ingredients from a recipe to its shopping list too, so this is not unique, but in Peel it flows from a plan that bends instead of one that locks.

Which one fits your household

Here is the decision, stated plainly, no "it depends" hand-waving:

  • Choose Cozi if your main need is a shared family calendar, chores, and household lists everyone can see, and you want it on Android or the web too. Its meal planner is a fine bonus on top of that.
  • Choose Peel if your main need is collecting recipes (especially from TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube) and planning meals from them, and you want that plan to flex when the week changes. You are on iPhone or iPad, and you do not need a family calendar inside the same app.
  • Use both if you want. Plenty of households keep Cozi for the calendar and use Peel for the actual cooking. They solve different problems, so they do not conflict.

If you are the cook in the family and you have been fighting Cozi's Recipe Box and its calendar-shaped meal planner, Peel is the piece you have been missing. Compare it against the free field in our roundup of the best free meal planning apps.

Frequently asked questions

Is Cozi free?

Yes. Cozi Family Organizer is free to download on iOS, Android, and the web. The free version is ad-supported and includes a shared family calendar (now limited to a rolling 30-day window), shopping lists, to-do lists, reminders, a Recipe Box, and a basic meal planner. Cozi Gold is $39 per year and removes ads, lifts the calendar limit, and adds month view, calendar search, and a birthday tracker. Cozi Max is $79.99 per year and adds AI features such as AI Event Import, AI Recipe Creator, and AI Meal Planner.

Does Peel have a family calendar?

No. Peel does not have a shared family calendar or chores and task lists for the whole household. That is Cozi's job, and Cozi does it well. Peel is a recipe-first meal planner. It shares recipes, meal plans, and a live partner kitchen, but it is not a family-coordination hub. If a shared calendar for the whole household is what you need, keep Cozi for that.

Can Peel import recipes from TikTok and Instagram?

Yes. Peel imports recipes from TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube using AI extraction, plus unlimited imports from recipe websites and blogs. Free accounts get social-import credits that refresh every week, and Premium removes the cap. Cozi's Recipe Box does not import from social video. This is the main reason people move recipe collection from Cozi to Peel.

Is Peel on Android?

Not yet. Peel is iOS and iPadOS only right now. Android is planned, not never, but we built for iOS first to make the experience excellent before we expand. Cozi runs on iOS, Android, and the web today, so if your household is split across platforms, Cozi has the wider reach.

If you came here from Cozi looking for real recipe collection and meal planning that bends when the week changes, Peel is free to try. Import a few recipes from your favorite creators, build a pool, and let the grocery list write itself.
